Links to Downloadable Software

I prefer that you do not use web authoring software such as Netscape Composer or Front Page for producing your web pages for this course.  In this introductory course our goal is to develop a good foundation in HTML, and the best way to do that is to write pages in HTML from scratch.

I do recommend that you use the HTML text editor Arachnophilia for creating your web pages.  It color codes html code and allows you to easily preview the results of your coding.  This program is absolutely FREE, so there is no worry about your version expiring before the semester is over.

  • Arachnophilia (download a zipped local copy of this  - HTML Editor CareWare by Paul Lutus - No Charge Software.  This file is also available in my progdata folder :  hicks/Web/Arachnophilia3.9.zip  You will need to upzip the file after downloading)

You will need an FTP program for transferring files to your Unix server account.  The following is free and will be sufficient for all tasks you will need for this course.

  • SmartFTP at http://smartftp.com/ for transferring HTML and graphic files to the Unix web server.  The SmartFTP,  ftp program is available in campus computer labs.  SmartFTP is free for personal, educational and non-commercial use.
  • FTP Commander (Referenced in the textbook HTML Illustrated) Shareware program, not available on campus

Graphic Software:

It is not necessary to have all of these programs, and you will not be using any of them until unit #3.  Since the free versions often have a limited free use period, I would suggest you wait until you need the programs before you download them.  If you already have access to a graphics program you are comfortable using, then stick with it.

  • Fireworks from Macromedia - Use to create Animated Gifs, Image Maps, JavaScript rollovers and more, 30 day trial version.

  • GifConstruction Set - Use to Create Animated Gifs and Banners

  • MapEdit- Image Map Shareware

  • Adobe Photoshop 6.0 - The favorite graphics program for professional designers.
